EQUATIONS - Equitable Tourism Options

Established in 1985 in Bangalore, India, it investigates impacts and alternatives in tourism policies and structures. We believe that the present form of tourism raises serious questions regarding its real benefits, as also its socio-economic impacts on host communities. Our work focuses on tourism concerns in India and the developing world and includes documentation, publications, research, seminars, networking, advocacy and lobbying for tourism that is more just, culturally appropriate, and equitable. We see ourselves as a campaigning and advocacy organisation, and have an excellent documentation centre of materials, reports, and clippings built over 15 years of work on tourism issues. Our programmes in the recent years have focused on the areas of coastal issues, women and tourism, the child and tourism, globalisation, indigenous people, wildlife tourism and ecotourism, tourism policy interventions and tourism education. While we are based in Bangalore, we have an extensive network of partners in the South Indian states and also at the national and international level. Our model of networking implies collaboration with a wide range of individuals, institutions and groups - in order to bring multiple perspectives and competencies into our interventions.
